Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
The koshi Tappu wildlife Reserve is a small reserve (175 sq km) that lies on the beautiful flood plain of the sapt koshi in eastern Nepal. It runs north from the massive koshi Barrage and the Indian border.
The reserve is often flooded during the monsoon, although mostly to shallow depths only. It is, nonetheless, home to the last surviving group of wild buffalo (around 200) and several species of deer. The vegetation is mainly grassland, with some mixed riverine forest .A total of 280 species of birds – including many migratory birds – have been recorded. Local villagers harvest grasses for thatching, and also fish and collect edible fruits and ferns.
